AI narration for fantasy and sci-fi audiobooks
Make a fantasy or science fiction audiobook with AI: handling invented names, large casts, long word counts and what a 120,000-word epic costs.
Fantasy and science fiction are long, name-heavy and full of speakers. That makes them a good fit for AI narration on cost and a harder fit on pronunciation, so the setup matters.
The three problems to plan for
Invented names and places. A narrator has to guess how to say "Aelwyn" or "Kharazad". Decide how each should sound, then respell it phonetically in the sentence where it is read wrongly. Reuse the same spelling throughout.
Length. Epic fantasy often passes 120,000 words. At about 9,000 words per hour that is more than 13 hours, so the difference between a human narrator at hundreds of dollars per finished hour and credits at roughly a credit per hour is large. See the full comparison.
Casts. Give the narrator a steady, neutral voice and give your main characters distinct voices. Listen to a battle or council scene, where many characters speak in quick succession, because that is where mix-ups happen.
Voices to audition
For narration, try Fenrir (excitable) for action, Charon (informative) for world-building heavy text and Gacrux (mature) for older characters. Audition them with a page of your own text on the AI voices page and the studio.
Preparing the manuscript
Remove maps, appendices and glossaries as narrated text, or keep them and decide how they should be read. Spell out symbols and anything that depends on typography. The manuscript prep guide has a checklist.
Length and cost
A 120,000-word fantasy is about 13.3 hours, so about 14 credits. Use the length calculator for your own word count.
Common questions
How do I fix invented names that are pronounced wrongly?
Edit the sentence and respell the name phonetically for narration, then regenerate only that sentence. Keep a short list of spellings and reuse them across the book.
How long is a fantasy audiobook?
Fantasy novels often run 90,000 to 150,000 words, which is about 10 to 17 hours of audio, or 10 to 17 credits.
Can a large cast have different voices?
Yes. Warblize assigns a voice per character. Each character needs a distinct voice, so a very large cast usually gives main characters their own and shares voices among minor ones.
