What the formatter does
Upload the manuscript you wrote in Word, Google Docs (downloaded as .docx), Scrivener (compiled to .docx), Markdown or plain text. The formatter finds your chapters, keeps your italics and bold, turns *** or # lines into proper scene breaks, and builds a clean EPUB 3 file with:
- A title page, copyright page and optional dedication
- A linked table of contents, nested under parts if your book has them
- Styled chapter openings with optional drop caps and small caps
- Curly quotes, real em dashes and ellipses
- About the author and Also by pages at the back
- Your cover, if you add one
You can also upload an existing EPUB to restyle it with a new theme.
Getting the best result from Word
Give every chapter title the Heading 1 style (Home tab, Styles). If your book has parts, use Heading 1 for the parts and Heading 2 for the chapters. Lines that start with "Chapter", "Prologue" or "Epilogue" are recognised even without a style. Put *** or # on its own line wherever you want a scene break.
Where to publish the EPUB
Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Kobo Writing Life, Google Play Books and Barnes & Noble Press all accept EPUB files. Distributors such as Draft2Digital and PublishDrive do too. When the ebook is live, an audiobook is the next format readers look for: see where to sell an AI-narrated audiobook and work out its length with the audiobook length calculator.
Common questions
Is the book formatter really free?
Yes. There's no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many books you format. It's part of Warblize, which turns books into audiobooks.
Will the EPUB work on Amazon KDP?
Yes. KDP accepts EPUB files and converts them for Kindle. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Barnes & Noble Press and Draft2Digital accept EPUB too.
Which files can I upload?
Word (.docx), EPUB, Markdown (.md) and plain text (.txt), up to 20 MB. For a PDF or an old .doc file, open it in Word and save it as .docx first.
How does it find my chapters?
From the Heading 1 style in Word, Markdown # headings, or lines that start with Chapter, Prologue or Epilogue. You can rename, add back or leave out any chapter before you download.
Do you keep my manuscript?
Not on our servers. They use your file only to build the preview and the EPUB, don't store it, and forget it after two hours. Your book and settings are saved in your own browser, so you can close the tab and carry on later on the same device. Remove a book from the formatter's start screen at any time.
Will I lose my edits if I refresh or come back later?
No. Every change is saved in your browser as you make it. Open the formatter again on the same device and pick up where you left off.
Can it make a print-ready PDF?
Not yet. The formatter makes ebooks (EPUB 3). Print layout is on our list.
Why doesn't my ereader show the theme's fonts?
Ereaders let readers choose their own font and size, so the theme controls layout: headings, drop caps, scene breaks and spacing. That's how professionally published ebooks behave too.
